On the 28th of February, in the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology of STU in Bratislava, the first "Academia Meets Industry" seminar took place. This seminar is a part of the project FrontSeat. "Academia Meets Industry" seminars are activities aimed to stimulate discussion between academia and industry managers and practitioners. We believe in the need for the industry to play an active role in this discussion to help to shape the academic research agenda that would reflect their pressing and emerging issues. On Friday, February 24, 2023, PhD students Tereza Ábelová and Diana Dzurková defended their Dissertation Examination. Congratulations!
Tereza Ábelová defended her thesis on "Predictive Control of the Multipurpose Battery Energy Storage in the Microgrids" supervised by Prof. Michal Kvasnica.
Diana Dzurková defended her thesis on "Secure and Privacy-Preserving Process Control Based on Homomorphic Encryption" supervised by Prof. Miroslav Fikar, and the supervisor-specialist is Dr. Martin Kalúz.
We organized the first Consortium Meeting of the Project FrontSeat on February 17, 2023. The Plenary meeting was organized in a virtual format. In the morning session, the members of the project Consortium from STU, RUB, and UNIPI discussed the current status of the project, WPs, future plans, etc. As a part of the afternoon session, there was organized an online scientific session as a part of the seminar series on the “Research Seminar on Smart Cybernetics“. The scientific session was opened to a wide audience. In this session, two scientific lectures were delivered:
(i) Sebastian Leonow (RUB Bochum, Germany): Collaborative control under strict security requirements on lean embedded hardware,
(ii) Riccardo Bacci di Capaci, Marco Vaccari (UNIPI, Italy): Acid Gas Treatment in Waste-to-energy Plants: a case study of system identification and advanced control.
The final session of the Consortium Meeting was dedicated to the General Assembly meeting.
Annual meeting of IAM on February 9-10, 2023 in the Smolenice Castle.
On behalf of the FrontSeat project, we organized the afternoon Virtual Scientific Session of the plenary meeting of the project FrontSeat:
- 13:30 - Sebastian Leonow (Ruhr Universität Bochum): "Collaborative control under strict security requirements on lean embedded hardware",
- 14:30 - Riccardo Bacci di Capaci, Marco Vaccari (Università di Pisa): "Acid Gas Treatment in Waste-to-energy Plants: a case study of system identification and advanced control".
We organize a scientific seminar on "Soft Sensors: Applications and Rumination". The scientific seminar will be led by Prof. Yuri Shardt - a full professor at the Department of Automation Engineering, Technical University of Ilmenau, Germany. The scientific seminar is organized in the framework of the FrontSeat project, as part of the seminar series on "Research Seminar on Smart Cybernetics".
The project FrontSeat has been presented in the article written by Professor Miroslav Fikar and published in the public-oriented website "aktuality.sk" (in Slovak) within a rubric "Science, research - our chance".

The first Academia Meets Industry seminar will take place in the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology of STU in Bratislava on the 28th of February 2023, at 15:00. During the seminar, the FrontSeat project will be presented, and members of the industrial council will be introduced. After that, the discussion and termination of the negotiation will follow.
On January 16, IAM students presented and discussed the achieved goals in the course "Process Control Project" focused on the development of the Smart Eco Greenhouse VESNA. Several interesting extensions were designed and implemented.
Due to a number of requests, the Organizing Committee of the Process Control 2023 conference has decided to extend the submission deadline for the contributions to January 29, 2023. Contributions can be submitted online via the conference management system. All necessary instructions can be found on the following page:
